The art world has become increasingly professionalized, which means a Master of Fine Arts degree is now often a necessary step on the road to gallery representation and critical acclaim. We tallied some of the best programs in the United States—taking into account tuition fees, admission rates, and first-hand feedback from faculty and alumni—in order to spotlight 15 programs that are worth your time (and money).
Opportunities
Some highlights from our findings include SCAD’s tuition, which is on the more affordable end of the spectrum. SCAD tuition begins at $39,605 but our research shows that 98% of students receive an average of $13,157 in grant aid. As mentioned with other schools on our list, it is notable that SCAD, as an art school, will use the majority of their spending of those funds for their art programs. Though small (its total undergraduate enrollment is about 1,400), MICA is moderately diverse with a student body that is 11% Asian, 10% Black or African American, 10% Hispanic/Latino, and 34% White. MICA is quite expensive, with tuition coming in at $53,815 and the cost of living in Maryland should be considered. However, if that doesn’t cut it for some prospective students, MICA offers a number of need and merit-based scholarships, though these are competitive.

Among the largest art programs in the country operated with public funding, CSULB has over forty full-time faculty in the School of Art, with nearly 2,000 students majoring in its programs. The School of Art at California State University Long Beach offers BAs in studio art, art history, and art education, along with a certificate program in museum studies, making this school a strong choice for a student interested in a career in teaching or curating art. The University of Southern California (USC) is among our highest-rated, major universities that are not primarily an art school.
BFAs in specialized fields like printmaking, illustration and animation, photography, and a certificate program in biomedical illustration make up just a few of this school’s offerings. Recent reporting showed that 82% of responding SFAI graduates currently were employed or had been employed as artists. From corporate internships to semesters painting in Florence, these programs offer many student experiences. The Gayle Garner Roski School of Art and Design at University of Southern California (USC) was first organized in 1883, and founded in 1895. One of Southern California’s oldest art and design schools, USC Roski provides several paths to study Graphic Design. The two-year option consists of 75 units completed across four full terms, plus one ArtCenter Lite (ACL) summer term.
MassArt received high marks from us for their affordable tuition, coming in at $14,570 (in-state) and $40,960 (out-of-state) and their financial aid and scholarship opportunities. 100% of the students receive around $8,494 in grant aid, and there are many scholarships available from their list of MassArt Foundation Scholarships. In addition, their endowment size, though smaller than many others on our list, at $17 million, is all going to the arts programs.
The main campus in idyllic Laguna Beach is supplemented by a modern facility in Big Bend, where computer labs, a recording studio, and animation studios are available for students. Mixed media, fashion, book arts, furniture design, curation, experimental animation, toy design—these schools cover the spectrum of arts careers. MCAD has an average acceptance rate of 57%, but a comparatively low graduation rate, with only 58% of students graduating within eight years. In terms of diversity, the student body is 7% Asian, 5% Black or African American, 11% Hispanic/Latino, 64% White. California has long been a magnet for artists and creative thinkers, from the Hollywood dream-makers to the tech visionaries of Silicon Valley. A minimum of 126 credits is required for graduation; 42 of these credits must be in courses numbered 300 and above.
It’s hard to beat a New York school with such a great program that is also located in a city that is arguably the art capital of the world. Otis College offers undergraduate degrees in a wide variety of visual and applied arts, media, and design. The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) is high on our list because it has a great variety of art-based majors, strong graduation and retention rates, and much more.
